Chiari Malformation. Ever heard of it? Chances are, probably not.
Chiari is a uncommon, often misdiagnosed disease affecting primarily women. In a nutshell, it is the malformation of the brain which causes headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness in the head and face, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, nausea, impaired coordination and, in severe cases, paralysis and death. Surgery is the only treatment available to correct functional disturbances or halt the progression of damage to the central nervous system.
Every year, Women's Throwdown supports a woman in our community in need of help. As we scoured the gym, we learned of Kayln Blacklock's story, her perseverance, and her success using fitness as a way to cope with this horrible disease.
